Horse Breed Composition Analysis Test
Gain a deeper understanding of your horse’s true genetic heritage with our advanced Horse Breed Composition Analysis. This test uses high density SNP markers to identify the breeds and breed groups that contribute to your horse’s DNA profile. Whether your horse is a sport horse, pony, warmblood or of mixed lineage, this analysis provides science based insights that go far beyond traditional pedigree records.

Key Features of the Horse Breed Test
What Does the Breed Analysis Reveal?
Horse breeding is genetically more complex than canine breeding. Only a small number of horse breeds, such as the Arabian, Thoroughbred and Friesian, have long established closed studbooks and highly distinct genomic signatures.
Many other well known breeds, including the Oldenburg, KWPN and Württemberger, operate open or partially open studbooks, allowing controlled introduction of new bloodlines to refine performance, conformation and temperament.
To reflect this complexity, your Horse Breed Composition Analysis is divided into two detailed sections:
Part 1: Identified Breeds & Breed Groups.
You will receive:
• A percentage breakdown of detected breeds.
• Classification into relevant breed groups.
• A clear pie chart visualisation.
• Genetic clustering insights.
This section shows how much each breed or breed group contributes to your horse’s overall DNA composition.
Part 2: Breed Similarity Assessment.
This section identifies:
• The breed your horse most closely resembles genetically.
• Up to three additional genetically similar breeds.
• A similarity ranking based on genomic comparison.
Because of historical crossbreeding, the closest genetic match may not always align with the registered studbook, particularly in warmblood and sport horse populations.
Key Benefits of the Horse Breed Composition Test
This test focuses exclusively on genomic breed background. It does not screen for hereditary diseases or performance related genes.
• Understand physical traits and behavioural tendencies.
• Tailor training and performance expectations.
• Gain clarity on crossbreeding influences.
• Support informed breeding decisions.
• Fill gaps in incomplete or missing pedigree records.
• Receive independent, DNA based verification.
Who Can Benefit from the Horse Breed Composition Analysis Test?
The Horse Breed Composition Analysis is ideal for a wide range of horses, including warmbloods, ponies, draft types, Iberian breeds and mixed lineage sport horses.
• Owners of horses with unknown or mixed ancestry.
• Breeders refining breeding strategies.
• Buyers seeking transparency before purchase.
• Sport horse owners assessing performance lineage.
• Rescue or imported horses with limited documentation.
How to Collect a Sample for the Horse Breed Test
Accurate results depend on proper sample collection. DNA must be extracted from the follicle (root) of plucked mane or tail hairs, cut hair cannot be used. You will need to collect 60 to 80 hairs, ensuring each strand includes a visible root bulb (white or dark thickened end).
Instructions:
• Pull 60 to 80 mane or tail hairs (do not cut them).
• Ensure the roots are visible and intact.
• Attach the hairs to the sample card using the adhesive strip, keeping the roots uncovered.
• Label the sample card clearly.
• Place each horse’s sample in a separate sealable bag to avoid cross contamination.
• Send the samples using the provided shipping instructions.
No veterinary visit is required.
