Key Features of the Grandparentage Test

Requirements for the grandparentage DNA test

Due to the specifications of the New York State Department of Health's regulations, we cannot offer home paternity tests to New York residents.  However, we can offer legal paternity and relationship tests in New York. Contact us or click here for more information.

We suggest a grandparentage test when clients need to establish the paternity of a child through that child’s paternal grandparents. We recommended testing both grandparents if available, as this will help  to obtain more conclusive results. As in all relationship testing, the sample of a common parent (normally the mother) is always recommended. The price of the grandparentage test will change according to the number of people being tested.

Options for grandparentage analysis

There are two options to consider:

DNA analysis of a single grandparent: this test requires DNA samples from just ONE of the grandparents. We DO NOT offer single grandparents testing and suggest that you contact us to discuss alternative tests in such cases.DNA analysis of both grandparents: We can only offer grandparent testing if we have samples from both grandparents. The mother’s sample should also be included if available.

In both types of tests, the DNA profiles being analyzed are compared with those of the grandchild to establish a biological relationship. The mother’s samples are included to quickly eliminate her share of the DNA in the heredity process, which in turn leaves just the paternal half to test.

Test results

The cost of our grandparentage test starts from as little as $299. Results are normally sent by email within 5-7 working days following receipt of the samples at the laboratory.

Test results are intended to provide a statistical likelihood to support the relationship in question. Providing additional parties to be tested (for example, a known parent’s sample) or performing direct relationship testing may provide additional evidence.

Note: We can only guarantee a standard result turnaround time when testing takes place solely using oral swab samples. Using a discreet sample for your test may lead to an increase in turnaround time.

The Human Tissue Act

It is important to be aware that in the UK the Human Tissue Act regulates the collection and analysis of any human tissue. In order to send a sample for analysis, the person or donor of that sample must give their consent in writing in order for us to test their sample. Furthermore, in order to be fully compliant with the Human Tissue Act, the donor of the sample must also be made aware of how their DNA sample will be used. Failure to comply with the Human Tissue Act is a criminal offence.

We will not proceed with any testing if we do not have consent from all test participants. Testing any samples will be put on hold until we get the required signatures from all individuals.
