The ease of understanding the final results of my dogs testing were thee best! It CLEARLY lists high, medium and zero intolerances to food. I was at the end of my rope trying to figure out WHY my young dog was itching so badly! Unfortunately, I was feeding him a large majority of foods that he has a high sensitivity to ( I cook and freeze fresh food at home for him). He never really liked commercial dry dog food as a puppy. So so very thankful I found your company! It saved him years of unnecessary allergies.

Coby was biting his paws and scratching his skin non-stop. Having nearly given up I took the Dog Allergy test and now I know that my dog is allergic to corn, no more itching or paw biting!

I was so concerned about helping my dog but the vet said their test would be around $400 and prescribed Aloquil. When I research it I found that it could be harmful to her. No way I was going to do that. The results of the allergy test has been so helpful in choosing her food and other products like shampoo and being able to avoid her sensitivity triggers.

Key Features of the DNA My Dog Breed Test

More About this Test

This test analyses the genetic makeup of your dog in order to establish its full breed composition. By understanding a dog’s breed composition, we can highlight which diseases they are most likely to suffer from, tell you about their unique personality traits and so much more. Results are ready in 2-3 weeks from receipt of samples at the laboratory.

Our dog DNA database is composed of over 102 breeds of dogs. If your dog contains DNA from a breed that is not in our database, the DNA represented in that part of your dog’s genetics will be assigned to the foundation breed or to the next most closely related breed or breeds. Visit the list of breeds tested HERE.

Important Note

As the results are based on the dog’s entire gene pool it will not necessarily reflect the dog’s current appearance. Guessing a mixed-breed’s ancestry can be difficult even for knowledgeable dog observers, because mixed-breeds have much more genetic variation than purebreds. The presence of certain dog breeds in your results does not guarantee that the dog will look like the specific detected breeds, because the genetic contributions from the other breeds present may be more visible.

The Testing Process

Once you have ordered the test, we will promptly dispatch your canine sample collection kit. Included in the kit are mouth swabs that will be used for collection of DNA. All you need to do is gently rub the swab inside your dog’s mouth, against the inner cheek. The rubbing procedure can be done in less than a minute and is completely painless. Once samples are in the laboratory, scientists will proceed to analyse the DNA in the canine cheek cells.

The dog DNA test is carried out at an experienced genetic testing laboratory specializing in breed identification and other dog DNA tests.

Note: This test is made for mixed-breed dogs and will not determine whether your dog is purebred.

Dog DNA Testing Results

DNA test results will be sent by email within 2-3 weeks from receipt of samples. There will be a host of valuable information included in the test, including:

  • A complete breakdown of your dog’s breed composition. The test will determine what breeds your dog is made up of. The breed composition scale goes from Level S (Single Breed Match), and then from Level 1 (61-99% of the DNA comes from one specific breed), down to Level T (Trace Amount Match). This structure helps you to see exactly what breed mix your pup’s DNA is made up of. Please view a detailed explanation of the breed classification.
  • A comprehensive guide to what kind of personality traits, exercise routines and behaviours you can expect from each individual breed in your dog. This information can prove to be useful to the pet owner who wants to make the most of their dog’s training, using techniques that are most suited to the temperaments and activity levels specific dog breeds.
  • Your official document showing the results with a gold stamp of approval. This document will break down the test results and is perfect for framing.
  • step-by-step guide of the illnesses and health problems that could plague your particular breed mix. You can use this information to prepare for future illnesses or address problems that might already be present.

The Dog DNA Database

Experience indicates that approximately 2.3% of all DNA canine testing will yield results that are inaccurate or cannot be interpreted. The reasons for this are that dogs have extremely high-levels of oral bacteria which may result in degeneration of the sample before our DNA extraction process commences.

Another important factor is that our dog DNA database is composed of over 102 breeds of dogs. This list covers the most common breeds of dogs we find in mixed breed dogs across North America. You need to bear in mind that there will be some dog breeds that may not be represented in our database. If your dog contains DNA from a breed that is not in our database, the DNA represented in that part of your dog’s genetics will be assigned to the foundation breed or to the next most closely related breed or breeds. Visit the list of breeds tested HERE.

If you are looking for a more in-depth study of your dog’s breed and general traits then you can proceed and order the Dog Breed Identification Test 350+ for only $109.

This advanced test will define your canine's ancestry going back three generations – parent, grandparent, great-grandparent! Taking the entire DNA profile of your dog, the canine breed identification test looks at a total of 1,800 genetic markers, with access to a vast database of over 350 breeds, types and varieties. The test results are one of the most comprehensive you can get when it comes to finding out your pup’s heritage.

FAQs

We have prepared a comprehensive FAQ list about our test which will help you further understand how the test works. We recommend that you read them and familiarise yourself further with the test.

The laboratory is able to identify the breeds present in your dog through a comprehensive DNA database which has been expanded from analyzing DNA from purebred dogs. Your dog’s DNA will be compared against this database, which highlights the differences between canine breeds.

In detecting breeds, they are considered ranges instead of absolute values. These breeds are listed on your certificate as levels. For starters, Level S recognizes a single breed match, which means there is only 1 breed present in the dog’s DNA. This is not a common level unless the dog’s parent or both parents were purebred or had 50% or more of this breed in their DNA.

Next is Level 1, which recognises a majority (61% to 99%) of one breed present in the dog’s DNA. Usually, a highly mixed breed dog will not have a breed in this category.

Level 2 represents breeds that can be easily recognizable in the canine (40% to 60%). Mixed breed dogs will often have breeds present at this level.

Level 3 represents dog breeds that are present in the range of 26% to 39%. Level 4 represents breeds that are present in the range of 10% to 25%. Level 5 represents breeds that make up 10% or less of the dog’s genetic makeup.

Finally, we have Level T, which represent breeds found as trace DNA amounts in the dog’s sample.

It is important to know that the reported breeds in the results will add up to 100% of the dog’s genetic makeup. Now, if there are more breeds present in the dog, so that each breed represents a small amount of the DNA, the lower the levels will be. For example, a mixed breed dog may not have a Level S or a Level 1 breed. On the other hand, a purebred dog may not have breeds reported at the other levels. This is why your dog may not have all breed levels present on its certificate.

Our current database covers the most common canine breeds found in the mixed breed population. In the event that your dog has DNA from an unlisted breed, that part of your dog’s genetics will be assigned to the most closely related breed/s or to the dog’s foundation breed/s. In some cases, the breed will be reported as unidentified.

If you think your dog’s breed is not covered by this database, please check our 350 Dog Breed Identification Test, which covers more than 350 breeds.

Unfortunately, the DNA My Dog Breed Test focuses on identifying breeds found in mixed breed dogs. If the test results indicate that only 1 breed is present in the dog, it may mean that the dog’s parent was a mixed breed, but the tested dog only inherited one particular breed. It does not mean that the tested dog is purebred.

Ensure that you are entering your customer ID number correctly. Please make sure that we have your email address in your account. Sometimes, the code is not recognized. In this case, please contact us so we can properly register your dog.

If you are not sure about your customer ID, cannot see it online, or your customer ID shows a different sample status, please contact us.

Your test kit includes four testing swabs; two of these will be used for collecting the dog’s sample, while the other two are meant for back-up. If you have one or two swabs with samples, we will still be able to analyze your dog’s DNA.

However, please contact us if all swabs have been destroyed so that we can send you a new set of swabs.

In most cases, you won’t hear from us after we receive your dog’s sample. You can check your status and your test results using your customer ID number.
